If you’re just going to work and punching in time on autopilot, maybe it’s time to look for something new.
If you feel overworked, the most likely answer is that you are. It can often be a case of trying to multitask so much that you end up taking on an unmanageable workload. If you feel like you’re in over your head, see if you can talk to your manager about redistributing some tasks, or getting support from a colleague. Examine your own processes and attitude and see if there’s something you can change. Being a tightly wound stress-ball can have implications for your health, your relationships and your overall quality of life. If you can’t find some relief at work, it’s time to look for an exit.
If you’re unmotivated and constantly producing work that is sub-par, it’s a good idea to think about why. Is your work so dull you’ve become complacent? Are you subconsciously trying to get fired? You deserve to have a job where you feel like your talents are being utilised. Your confidence might be low as a result of underachieving but everyone can work well and rewardingly. You just have to figure out how you want to work best, and what kind of company might facilitate that.
You Can’t Visualise the Future
Companies often have clear internal progression for their employees. Some jobs have obvious transferable skills that will equip you for your next big move. If your job doesn’t provide either of these things, then why are you there? Work should grow with you, so think about where you want to be and find how to get there.
You’re Just Paying the Bills
We’ve all been there – working for a paycheque and solely for a paycheque. Sometimes it’s just a necessity, but it doesn’t need to be a long-term one. Even if you feel like your current job doesn’t have anything that would endear you to a future employer, remember that you shouldn’t underestimate yourself. It just takes a little spin to turn a mediocre job into a great skills base. Take on a side project or hobby that means something to you, and reach out to others who are doing the same.
